Seminar 4- (Analysis of design manifesto)
In this seminar we looked at the 'first things first' manifesto, this was one that was on our brief so I was familiar with it, reading through it I actually accepted a lot of what they were saying, a lot of it is what has been fed to me and what I now believe. Especially about how the only way forward is to do graphic design in the commercial world, that that’s where the money is and if asked what graphic design is the only thing that is known is the branding side of things. So at first we went through the manifesto and annotated it, looking at what we agreed with and the reaction we had to other things. As shown below.

After we had done this and discussed it with the group, who had similar views of this manifesto and myself, we were asked to redact the manifesto, make our own by removing the parts we don’t like or don’t agree with, again I don’t disagree with much so the reduction wasn’t much but I wanted a real representation of what I thought. Some parts I didn’t agree with were that 'the profession's time and energy is used up manufacturing demand for things that are inessential at best'. This I really disagree with because although I think other type of graphic design are being overlooked I don’t think that commercial and brand design is 'inessential', I think this type of design is the most lucrative and important as well.

Then I decided to redact the manifesto further taking away even more words just leaving a few that were key. This was really difficult for me trying to decide which words were more important than others but eventually I got this result.
I removed a lot of the manifesto but the parts I kept were summarised was.
'How designers are presented as advertisers and teachers promote this, we are encouraged to use our imagination to sell dog biscuits, its what graphic designers are perceived to do. Advertising, marketing and brand design are endorsing a saturated society, changing the way consumers, think, speak, feel and interact. Our expectations need to be challenged with different perspectives on design'.

I then thought about the manifesto and what a manifesto actually is and I found that its about our thoughts and feelings on a matter, and this brought the idea of a speech bubble or even a light blub, so I turned the manifesto into a light blub, representing this, the worlds blacked out mean nothing but the picture is the representation.
