Jay: Box Deisgn
In this lesson the aim was to create a cereal box design based on the sketches we did last session. we had to bring scanned images of our characters and cereal box designs from last week.
When we had uploaded the scans onto our computers the next step was to make sure the scanned images were ready and appropriate to trace over. to do this we went into Photoshop and edited the levels to made the background white and the outlines more obvious because in some cases they were very light.
At this point I had a bit of a problem. Because my hard drive had not worked, I only had a photograph of my work, so when I adjusted levels the image went yellow and didn’t work, as it should have done. Because of this I knew I would have to do it again to get the right effect and document this correctly.
This is shown in the image below...

After this we went into illustrator, we imported the image we had just prepared and then fixed it so it fit into the size of a cereal box, 105X70 mm.
I realised that my mistake in this was that I had imported a picture of my character in a stood forward position instead of a cereal box design that I could trace; because of this I then fund it difficult to adapt my character and the elements within it into a cereal box design.
However I only realised this after I had traced over the character in illustrator, when doing this we has to separate the colour from the outline, initially id didn’t know why and its something I had never done before but we were told its god practice when sending products to print.
I found separating the colour a little difficult at first just because I didn’t understand it but then I got the hang of it and it was fine.
Then when starting to design my cereal box my problem came in. I don’t like what I have produced, its plain, boring and doesn’t look like a cereal box design and I am going to redo this by sketching out a detailed design and then tracing over it in illustrator, the reason I feel I needed to do this is because when sketching I can adjust the posting of my character and how she will stand and also make my own type. Because my studio work was changed last minute I haven’t had chance to do it yet but it will be something that I do in the next few weeks before returning to the next session.
Here is my work from the session...
