Analogue Communique 2D: session 3
We had our 3rd session on type, initially I didn’t know what else we could do with our type, but then when we got here we were told to enlarge and experiment even more, we saw some examples and some were more detailed and some were more messy, I wasn’t sure what I was going to go for yet but i knew that there was no point enlarging the type I had done on A4 just to a larger scale, it would have being pointless, so I decided to take the approach of stencilling and covering parts of the paper and painting over,
I wanted to keep the 3D feel as this is what made my type unique to others, i first made a stencil, cut it out and placed in on a piece of paper and painted thick black paint over it, as seen below, although I felt this was a good idea and the letter itself looked good, it was boring, there was nothing special or particularly experimental about it.
So I decided to do a letter another way by cutting out a stencil and placing it on another piece but not cutting the background out so that the paper stayed mostly white. I used another brush technique by dabbing instead of painting and I did this using a gradient from top to bottom, this gave the letters more interest and I think this worked well, but again I didn’t think it was too exiting, so I kept going because I liked the design and decided to keep the stencils as I could experiment with those later.
The process was very time consuming and originally I was using scissors to cut, after finding a scalpel, the lines were easier and quicker to cut as well as being neater. I already had stencils for repeated letters so I simply went over them again however if I do decide to use the stencils in my finalized product I wont have one each for the repeated letters, but I decided to work that out if it came to it.
The problem I encountered was half way through we ran out of the A2 paper I had being using, I was giving some other paper but it was a different colour and I didn’t want a big difference as it would look odd, so I had to stop there, I plan to finish this when I can get hold of more of the same paper
As I have said before I find type difficult some times however this year I think I have really got into it and experimented with more and more techniques and types.

below is what i managed to get up to before paper ran out...
