Language into objects
Our new brief named collide is all about 3 key ideas, happiness, the digital age and my future self, the idea behind this brief is to express yourself, your feelings and evoke emotion, create something that will show this in a design practice way. In Rob’s seminar on Friday we looked at the phrase "Turning language into objects", this comes from experimental jet set, an independent design agency based in Amsterdam. Consisting of Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers and Danny van den Dungen.
They focus on printed matter and site-specific installations, and describing their methodology as “turning language into objects”.
This is relevant because in this brief and any other graphic work we do, were getting across a message (language) and turning it into a poster, a book a animation etc... we turn it into something we can touch, read and analyse ourselves in a different way.
as i was struggling with ideas for the brief I decided to take a look at experimental jet set and see how they apply this methodology.
The studio created 'Left of the International' for an exhibition, this was a piece of wall art, the exhibition wished to 'trace the successful spread of “Swiss Style” and confirms its relevance with a selection of contemporary works'. Below are some examples of their work and how this conforms to the Swiss style of the postmodernist world.
I have previously looked at Swiss style, however I don’t like the gridded, style, I think although its clean cut and simple, it can be confusing at time, however the way the work is portrayed has give me inspiration, I had an idea to get people to plan out their milestones and what they want to achieve in life to encourage them to go with their own choices and not others, a subject I have experienced personally, because of this the way of working on a wall would work well, the large scale would make it easier to sue, it would make it interactive to everyone and I can make objects and ideas to stick onto it, the objects will then be Turning the persons life into a story and planning their dream future right before their eyes. This has really inspired my idea and its one I hope to move forward with.
