Seminar Task: Appendix Proposal

Unfortunatly, this weeks seminar was cancelled, however we were given a template in which we should write an appendix proposal to go with our essay, asking us our aims and objectives, what we wished to produce from this and a methodology that would support this, here is my proposal...

Visual Appendix Proposal

1: Essay Abstract

This essay looks at how people in power use psychoanalysts and advertisers skill to aid their influence on us in not only our purchasing choices but in our life choices. Through time this has changed dramatically from where it started to where we are now in the advertising world, from propaganda to a revolutionary technology age. The essay looks at the work of Sigmund Freud and his idea of the unconscious mind being a main factor in advertising through the years right up to today. Also looking at how Edward Bernayse, Anna Freud and other social scientists and psychoanalysts contributed to the research into our ever changing society mind sets and psychological positions in relation to influence and persuasion.

2: Visual Appendix - Aims and Objectives

The objective of my visual appendix is to address the ever-changing society mindsets and psychological positions in relation to influence and persuasion within the advertising industry. I aim to do this using the idea of self-image in advertising over the years, from Marylyn Monroe to the 0 size models in magazines we see today. The outcomes I want to achieve are a series of experiments taking slightly different approaches to self-image; depending on what era they take influence from. Taking the Marylyn Monroe era and looking at how curvy was seen as attractive to more modern approaches that all women should be stick tin and size 6. The experiments will be from an advertising perspective to be seen by public audiences. My essay is about how graphic design and in particular advertising agencies have used persuasion and influencing techniques through time. Designers have tackled social issues in order to get people to take notice. These graphic advertising experiments will show the huge difference time has made and the change in attitude we have adopted.

3: Visual Appendix - Methodology

Describe an experimental methodology that will inform the production of the visual appendix. What rules will you follow? Think back to the theme of 'Open Works' and 'Performance' that we considered last term.

Produce small set of drawings, sketches, diagrams, mind-maps, photographs etc, which begin the process of visualising the Aims, Objectives and Methodology outlined in this proposal. Visualise your research.
