JODIE HIRST GRAPHICS

Inside page development

I started to create my inner pages, this was when i was at the stage of using digital methods to create a hand drawn authentic effect and again it was not working for me. I wasn’t getting the effect I wanted and I thought the whole thing was a little flat and boring, it didn’t interest me so how would it interest other people?

I decided to do everything hand drawn even all the fonts, nothing could be digital if I wanted the effect I was getting inspiration from. The use of vector shapes, drop shadows and digital text was not working well together. I also thought the 3 milestone boxes were making the pages look very similar and un interesting so I have decided to have it so there are 2 interchangeable slots and 1 millstone that cannot be changed. This is because the book is changing from an interactive book to more of a personal book for my future and what I want. There are some nightmare, dreams and ideals that will change but there are also some that will never change because of fears, thoughts and experiences and these are the ones that will be static for me.

Here are some ongoing development examples...

Instantly the pages look more attractive to the eye, I wanted the hand drawn diary look, to give it a personal touch to my future hopes and me. The fact that everything on all pages is drawn by hand and scanned in, I have done nothing on the computer because then I would go back to the digital look i was trying to avoid. However some things have more of a digital aspect than others, for example the new york illustration, it was image traced to give it a thick black line however I think partnered with the hand written type it works well and fits in with the rest of the books style. Although I have not finished the pages yet i can already get a good feel as to what the book will fell like.

Final Pages

When starting the book I was only certain of a few tings, that I needed space for 3 milestones per page and that i had decided to make one milestone on each double page and main aspect, one that I don’t think will change, in turn being a dream, ideal or nightmare milestone. i started on my first page using the new york milestone and using my own type to complement it, I really liked what I had produced the first page I was very happy with so I continued into his style.

Some pages I did I really liked and thought worked some not so well. I kept changing and developing until I got what I liked, until the colours were right, the fonts worked and the milestone spaces fit. i then added the panels at the bottom that allowed users to tick what they had completed and I though this made a good interaction and an incentive to keep the book, allowing you to change your milestones as you like. Some colour schemes worked better than other in some ways and I worked on them until I was happy with every page.

Overall I am happy with my book. I was told the blue colours I was using in my ordinal designs were cold and that if I’m talking about my future it should be bright and colorful and that’s exactly what i have done on each page and I think it flows through really well. Also printed on hand paper gives the craft feel and makes the colours have texture linking in with my animation.
