JODIE HIRST GRAPHICS

Dan Flavin

From last weeks lecture I found Dan Flavin’s work really inspirational, although they are big and a strange way of producing art and design it would be something I want to make and also have in my own house. I think their prominent and in your face but I think the soft glow really works with that and it makes me feel calm and excited all at the same time.

After being shown his 'pink in a corner' piece, I decided to look into him further and see what other work he has produced in this style.

I like how he uses the florescent light as a back lighting to a focal point of a person; it gives the image a main interest. He uses it to distinguish gender, showing how he thinks about colour and it connotations and meanings to people universally. In design its important to chose colours indicating your purpose and context, so this inspires me to think about this a little more and what message I am trying to get across.

My favorite way he uses the light is to create a full circle from a semi circle on a wall using the reflection onto broken glass on the floor. The dynamic angles really come through and the lighting is really interesting. It’s a simple but effective way of distorting something and I think it works really well with the light style he has in this case.

There are many different way he uses light but one way that stand out is how he doesn't use direct light to bring light to hallway panels but instead using slightly transparent Plexiglas type material to position the light, giving an even softer glow when the harshness of the light is being covered. it shows that he doesn't just use the same lights in the same way, he uses the same lights and finds inventive ways to produce work from natural everyday materials.

In my production workshops, I have being asked t create a type in a physical way and the use of light has interested me. I think the use of light could work really well and I hope to be able to take some inspiration from Dan Flavin and come up with some good work based on it.
