Analogue Communique 3D: Session 3
When we approached this last week I wasn't sure on what I wanted to do, however after a lecture with Alison where we were introduced to the work of Dan Flavin, I gathered a lot of inspiration from him. He used fluorescent lights to create art and spaces that look dramatic and wonderful. I wanted to experiment with light and the different ways I can portray light to people. My first thought as I did last week was to use a photo to have the text 'in the moment' behind the photograph coming through with the negative space blocked out by black card, with the help of a photo frame. Although I liked this technique and I think its one that works well, there are many other ways I could experiment with light type.
One I want to do next is using a slow shutter speed on a camera to catch the path of light, I could create shapes, but I want to create a series of type, messages that make up a song, a poem or a conversation. I think the idea of this could be magical when filmed and I’m defiantly going to try this next. Initially I argued that its not physical type, because the path isn't physical but caught on a camera it is, that’s the great thing about it.
For the week though I used tubes of fluorescent light to create words, in the light it doesn't look like much but when the lights are turned out and the words illuminates in the dark, it really gives off a good effect. I could get different colours and change the word in an animation this could be developed a lot further.
Below is a video of me making my type on a pice of cardboard ready to test in the dark.
Below is a photo of the type in the dark and a video of it working, I plan to make the light flash different colour and maybe incorporate some other ways to make type with light into a video making a lyric video of some sort.

A thought I had was dressing people in these tube lights from head to toe and making physical type from humans, when they move in the dark to change into different words you would only see the lights moving, it could be a really nice idea if executed properly. h
