Collide animation: 3D Skills (Extra Work)

As part of my Collide studio project I have decided to make a digital version of my physical aspect in the form of an animation. My physical aspect is a book and I wanted my animation to reflect that slightly and have a hand made feel to it, just like my book does. The book is a timeline through the milestones I wish to get to at certain ages in my life, but also some I don't want to do. The animation is a digital book.

I needed the animation to be done using cameras and 3D aspects, something I had not done much of but realised that we had covered in a previous after effects workshop. I went back over those notes and found ways to create the look I wanted. I used the 3D aspect to position the objects in front and behind each other in the right way, adding shadows to give the correct effect.

When I thought of making a page turn I thought about the page turn effect we had learnt, however I thought their would be a better way of doing this after looking at this animation by Proud Creative 'S4C Icons'. This is where my inspiration came from...

I found that rotating the whole of the illustration to reveal the next illustration behind would be the best option but I was a little confused on how to do this, until I remembered that in the after effects lessons, we were able to move the pivot point and doing this allowed me to make the screen rotate in the right way to look like a page in a book was turning. However I noticed something was different about the way the proud creative piece turned, theirs was slower so you could see the page turn and also opacities were played with so it looked real. Initially I found this all a little confusing but once I had done the first one by parenting the black solids to the backgrounds they moved as they should and the effect was looking much better.

I also like that in the proud creative piece, things were popping in and out and background were changing around objects so I placed some of that in their too, adding sound effects to add interest.

I wanted multiple things to move in my illustrations and I planned out what I wanted to move and when before importing into after effect so they were on separate layers and made it easier for me to animate. I learned that this was necessary in the after effects workshops.

I then added some calming music which dropped lower in volume when the voice over starts. If wanted a voice over to sort of example the story of my life but I wanted it also because it makes it more personal. I recorded my voice however I don't feel my own voice has the right feel for the animation I wanted something a little higher and softer but also wanted to keep it a girl to reflect me. I asked someone whom I thought had a better voice for the animation and this was the outcome.
