Looking Closer at Ellen Gallagher's 'DeLuxe'
After the lecture, I wanted look more into the work of Deluxe by Ellen Gallagher. I understand what it is Ellen was doing, showing how black people too refuge in their personalities, hair, dress and music as a safety from the whit exploitation, and I like the style of them. its not something I would do myself but I find them interesting, their pieces that make me want to look closer, read into what its about, manly because of their varying colour and layouts. I'm not sure that without the lecture I would have understood the pieces. At first glance they don't shout out the reasoning, you need back story and understanding of Ellen herself. Some are a little more obvious than others, for example the ones highlighting the hair because of the connotations with big hair and black people. I think these are clever and have a strong concept and purpose behind them that resonate with Ellen and her story themselves.
